Bally Hooley Steam Railway - Train
About Bally Hooley Steam Railway
BALLY HOOLEY Does that sound Irish to you? Well, you may well be right, as this was the name given to the end of the train line located in the Mowbray Valley more than a hundred years ago, most likely by an Irish immigrant. Nowadays, Bally Hooley is a locally owned family company operating a historic train service between The Reef Marina and St Crispin’s station. Mowbray is the diesel locomotive travelling on most days, with special Sunday and event appearances by Speedy or Bundy, 55-year-old coal-fired steam locomotives. They were the last trains used by the Mossman Sugar Mill to haul sugarcane to the Mill before switching over to diesel. The historic track has been in existence for over a century.
A return trip onboard from Bally Hooley Station to St Crispin’s Station, is a leisurely 90-minute trip. Departing the Reef Marina, enjoy a panoramic view over the Harbour, before passing through tropical mangroves. After a quick stop at the Sheraton Country Club and at QT Resort, head on towards picturesque St Crispin’s where the vibrant lakeside Choo Choo’s cafe is located. While the locomotive is uncoupled, and prepared for your return journey, you may like to enjoy a brunch, lunch, or a refreshing drink while taking in the grand lake view and the scenic golf course.
The service is staffed by a dedicated team of railway enthusiasts, who love sharing its story. Then it’s “All Aboard” for your return journey!
