About Thala Beach Nature Reserve

Thala Beach is a family-owned wildlife and nature reserve located on a private beach and nestled in 58 hectares of native forest.  Conveniently placed 45 minutes drive north of Cairns and only 15 minutes south of Port Douglas, guests enjoy the best of the tropics from this secluded paradise.

Sitting atop a headland with breathtaking vistas, the lodge provides an island-feel retreat and is the ideal base for exploring the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest as all regional day tours pick up direct from reception.

Thala has proudly achieved the highest accreditation of eco-certification through its sustainable practice and environmental sensitivity. Boutique timber bungalows are built high on stilts and nestle in the forest canopy providing a private and unobtrusive approach to nature. All bungalows enjoy ocean, mountain or forest views. Time spent relaxing on the timber-decked verandas is enhanced by sightings of birds, butterflies, possums and sugar gliders.

The restaurant boasts panoramic vistas, taking in the sparkling waters of the Coral Sea and the World Heritage-listed forests that clad the coastal ranges. Guests can dine among the birds in the surrounding treetops while enjoying modern Australian cuisine with friendly service.

Paths meander through rainforests and woodlands which are the habitats for endemic birds, plants and animals and which connect with private, sandy beaches. Delightful hours are spent discovering native flora & fauna, secluded coves and rock pools.

Guests also enjoy complimentary, guided nature tours by onsite ranges including a unique coconut odyssey, tree planting, beach discovery, stargazing at an outdoor observatory, beach discovery, wildlife walks and bird-watching tours.

Magical moments are created at Thala Beach. A feeling of unspoiled wilderness sets the ambiance; yet it is only 15 minutes into the centre of Port Douglas. It is private and exclusive.  A special combination of beauty, wilderness and seclusion awaits you.

Thala is located 45 minutes drive north of the Cairns International Airport and 15 minutes drive south of Port Douglas.  Sitting spectacularly atop a peninsula with breathtaking views of untouched coastline, it is the only beach nature lodge between Cairns & Port Douglas and provides the perfect location to explore the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.
